The idea of carrying out a project like this arose years ago, when I discovered that behind the picturesque houses of Barbados there was a whole story to be told.
Having embarked myself on the crazy idea of going all over the island on foot to locate each and every one of the Chattel Houses, and having drawn more than 400 in the last five years, you have in your hands the result of my exchanges with the persons living in. It has been a process of putting together pieces of the scarce existing information, to create an object that I intend to be didactic, or at least informative.
Between the books by Henry Fraser and Bob Kiss (document of a huge research) and the one by Jill Walker (beautiful art object) there was a gap that I have tried to fill, to bring the Chattel house a little closer to the maximum number of people. Here's my humble tribute to the authors of these books, and above all, to the people who live or have lived in one of the Chattel houses in Barbados.
